Kano is the largest city in northern Nigeria. It is an ancient trading city inhabited for well over a thousand years. Despite the international airport there is little tourist trade, but there are still surprisingly many attractions to visit and, as with the rest of Nigeria, the joy is in the people and the buzz of the streets.

Updated travel advice to Nigeria from: British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO)
Nigeria
Fri, 23 Nov 2012 14:40:00 GMT
We advise against ALL travel to:
- Borno State.
- Yobe State.
- Riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.
- Warri city.
- Kano city.
We advise against ALL BUT ESSENTIAL travel to:
- Bauchi State.
- Jos city.
- Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas in Plateau State.
- Gombe State.
- Mubi Town in Adamawa State and the area north of Mubi Town that borders Borno State.
- Non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Akwa Ibom States.
- Abia State.
- Kaduna City
- Zaria City.
- There was a bomb attack on a church in Kaduna City on 28 October, resulting in deaths and injuries. You should exercise vigilance and caution, and monitor the local media for further information.
- There have been violent clashes between ethnic groups in Agyaragu, Nassarawa State on 22 November which has led to a number of deaths. British nationals in the area should exercise vigilance and caution, and monitor the local media for further information.
- Following the fatal attacks on students in Port Harcourt on 8 October demonstrations and unrest could occur without warning. You are advised to remain vigilant, and avoid large crowds and demonstrations.
- On 2 October there were fatal shootings at the student housing area associated with the Adamawa State University, Federal Polytechnic and School of Health Technology in Mubi, Adamawa State. A curfew has been in place in the town from 1500 hours to 0600 hours. You should exercise vigilance and caution, and monitor local media for further information on the curfew.
- International news events can sometimes trigger anti-Western demonstrations. Western diplomatic missions, interests and citizens could be the focus for protests. There is the potential for increased tension on Fridays. These news events may also present some opportunities for terrorist groups to exploit. We advise particular caution and vigilance at these times, including maintaining a low profile, varying routines and not setting regular patterns of movement whilst travelling. If you become aware of any nearby protests you should leave the area immediately. Demonstrations have occurred in a number of cities across northern Nigeria as well as Abuja. Western embassies have previously closed at short notice as a precaution to these demonstrations. You should keep yourself informed of developments.
- There is a high threat from terrorism in Nigeria. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including government, security and educational institutions, international organisations as well as public venues and areas such as restaurants, bars, markets, hotels, shopping centres, places of worship and other areas frequented by expatriates, foreign tourists and business travellers. You should avoid affected areas in the immediate aftermath of an attack. Attacks occur frequently on religious and public holidays. There have been regular attacks on churches in northern Nigeria at times of worship. We cannot therefore rule out further attacks taking place. See Safety and Security - Terrorism.
- A number of curfews are being enforced across Nigeria. We are currently aware of curfews in Plateau, Kaduna and Yobe States and Kano City, Kogi Central Senatorial District and Mubi town in Adamawa State. Curfews are used on a regular basis in Nigeria following incidents and unrest, and can be imposed and lifted at short notice. British nationals are urged to comply with all curfews. Monitor local media to find out about curfews that are being enforced. The British High Commission's ability to provide consular services is limited as a result of curfews. See Safety and Security - Local Travel.
- There is a threat of kidnapping throughout Nigeria. Foreign nationals have been the target of kidnaps. On 12 May 2011, a British national was kidnapped alongside an Italian national in Kebbi State. Both hostages were killed in Sokoto on 8 March 2012. We advise British nationals to exercise vigilance and caution.
- Localised outbreaks of civil unrest can occur at short notice. You are advised to avoid large crowds, demonstrations and obvious political gatherings. Trouble on the streets can be spontaneous, and can quickly lead to violence. Details and advice are circulated via the British High Commission's Community Liaison Officers' network. We advise British nationals staying in Nigeria for three months or more to register with the British High Commission.
- Violent crime is prevalent in the south of the country, including Lagos. See Safety and Security - Crime.
- New traffic laws have been passed in Lagos prohibiting actions such as eating, smoking or using a mobile phone while driving and riding a motorcycle without a helmet. Motorists face fines or imprisonment for violations. The full provisions can be found on the Lagos State Government website.
- Nigeria experiences heavy rainfall during the wet season (June - October) and flash flooding can occur. Water-borne disease poses a greater risk during the rainy season. See Safety and Security - Local Travel - Weather warnings for further information.
-
Around 117,000 British nationals visit Nigeria each year. 50 British nationals required consular assistance in Nigeria in the period 01 April 2011 - 31 March 2012. See General - Consular Assistance Statistics.
-
You should take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. See General - Insurance.
